Our Team & Mission

Cowboy Clean Fuels’ roots trace back to the Center for Biogenic Natural Gas Research at the University of Wyoming, where Dr. Michael Urynowicz began his work to understand and enhance the unique geological and microbiological conditions in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana, which resulted in a vast biogenic coalbed methane resource.  Over more than a decade, his and the Center’s work yielded multiple patents surrounding the novel approach to transform and leverage this unique resource into a large-scale Renewable Natural Gas and Carbon Removal and Sequestration opportunity.  The patents and decade’s worth of learnings and know-how have formed the basis for Cowboy Clean Fuels, which was founded to commercialize the UW technology in 2020.  CCF is now poised to bring the technology to market, consistent with the “Biomass with Carbon Removal and Storage, plus Renewable Natural Gas” or “BiCRS+RNG” Methodology.

While at the University of Wyoming, Dr. Michael Urynowicz, conducted extensive research at the Center for Biogenic Natural Gas Research and patented several technologies that form the foundation of the Cowboy process.  This innovative process leverages natural systems and repurposes idle, existing natural gas infrastructure to permanently remove carbon from the atmosphere and produce carbon-negative natural gas.
