What sets our Biomass with Carbon Removal and Storage (BiCRS) process apart

At Cowboy Clean Fuels, we are pioneering a revolutionary approach to durable carbon removal and geologic sequestration.

Our unique BiCRS plus Renewable Natural Gas (BiCRS+RNG) process starts with the injection of biomass into coalbed methane wells where microorganisms convert it into carbon dioxide and methane. While the CO₂ is durably stored in the coal formation, the methane is produced and sold as Renewable Natural Gas.

Our process uses existing wells which reduces the need for new infrastructure and increases efficiency.

Carbon Injection

We begin by injecting organic biomass into existing CBM wells in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin. These wells reach a porous coal formation 1,000 feet underground, which hosts an ecosystem of native methanogenic microorganisms.

Carbon Storage

In the coal seams, microorganisms naturally break down the injected biomass into CO₂ and methane. The CO₂ is then adsorbed onto the coal. At prevailing reservoir pressures, this adsorption is irreversible, rendering it removed, permanently stored and prevented from being released into the atmosphere.

Carbon Conversion

A completely unique aspect of our carbon removal process is Renewable Natural Gas production. In addition to CO₂, the process also produces methane. But unlike the CO₂, the methane is not adsorbed by the coal and is easily pumped to the surface through other CBM wells, where it can be injected into natural gas pipelines and sold as RNG.

Scalability

Our CDR process offers higher scalability than any other commercial CDR process. By leveraging natural systems, existing infrastructure and the vast resources of the Powder River Basin, our projects can expand the market for CDR to enable real impact on both the energy transition and net zero carbon emission goals.

We can adjust the process to produce more or less RNG and can bundle carbon removals with RNG production to tailor the Carbon Intensity (“CI”) of the RNG to meet customer preferences and requirements.
