Project 1 — The Triangle Unit
Innovative Renewable Energy and Carbon Sequestration Project:
Cowboy Clean Fuels (CCF) is developing the "Triangle Unit Renewable Energy and Carbon Capture and Storage Project" (TRECCS) in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin, turning coalbed methane (CBM) resources into low-carbon renewable natural gas (RNG) while sequestering carbon dioxide (CO2) in coal seams.
Economic and Job Benefits:
The project will support Wyoming's energy and agricultural sectors, creating 221 direct and indirect jobs in 2025, with $8.8 million in tax revenues and contributing over $36 million to Wyoming's GDP annually once fully operational.
Sugar Beet Residue Products as Feedstock:
CCF uses residue products from sugar beet refining, such as molasses, injecting them into deep coal formations where natural methanogenic organisms convert them into methane (CH4) and CO2, with the CO2 permanently sequestered in the coal.
Wyoming's Leadership in Clean Energy:
CCF's project aligns with Wyoming’s role in decarbonizing the West, leveraging the state's natural resources, infrastructure, and workforce to pioneer renewable energy and carbon capture solutions.
Carbon Sequestration and Renewable Gas Production:
Once fully operational, the Triangle Unit project is expected to produce 0.7 billion cubic feet of RNG annually and sequester around 180,000 metric tons of CO2 per year.
Partnership with the University of Wyoming:
The project is supported by research from the University of Wyoming (UW) and its School of Energy Resources, and CCF will pay several million dollars annually in technology license fees to UW, further boosting Wyoming's innovation ecosystem and its flagship educational institution.
