What sets our Renewable Natural Gas apart

At Cowboy Clean Fuels, we are pioneering a revolutionary approach to producing Renewable Natural Gas (RNG).

Our unique process starts with the injection of organic biomass into coal bed methane (CBM) wells where existing microorganisms convert it into sustainable energy and carbon dioxide. The coal seam then selectively captures and permanently stores the carbon dioxide, ensuring it will never be released to the atmosphere.

Carbon Injection

We begin by injecting organic biomass into existing CBM wells in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin. These wells reach a porous coal formation 1,000 feet underground, which hosts an ecosystem of native methanogenic microorganisms.

Carbon Conversion

This biological process produces Renewable Natural Gas which can be pumped to the surface through other existing CBM wells and sent directly to consumers through existing pipelines.

Carbon Storage

A completely unique aspect of our process is CO₂ removal and storage. In addition to the RNG, our process also produces CO₂. But unlike the RNG, the CO₂ remains in the subsurface and is adsorbed onto the coal, rendering it permanently trapped and prevented from being released into the atmosphere.

Scalability

Our RNG process offers higher scalability than any other commercial RNG process. By leveraging natural systems, existing infrastructure and the vast resources of the Powder River Basin, Our projects can expand the market for RNG to enable real impact on both the energy transition and net zero carbon emission goals.

By repurposing these assets, Cowboy extends their economic life, enables land and resource owners to continue to generate needed income, defers costly reclamation and avoids potential environmental liability associated with abandoned and leaking wells.

Flexible Energy Solution

Cowboy’s process is highly flexible, allowing us to optimize the RNG production and Carbon Removal to meet customer and market needs.

We can adjust the process to produce more or less RNG and can bundle carbon removals with RNG production to tailor the Carbon Intensity (“CI”) of the RNG to meet customer preferences and requirements.
